St. George’s College is the 2019 High School Boys Lacrosse Champion as they beat Calabar 16-10 on Saturday, March 2.

The score line doesn’t reflect how close the game was. The Saints started well as good stick play and shooting gave them a comfortable 9-4 lead at half time.

In the second half, things would change as Calabar, who play a very physical game, dominated the action for long periods scoring 6 goals to STGC’s 2. The Saints, in an attempt to break the stranglehold also started to play physical. Inevitably, a strong tackle on a Calabar player threatened to turn the stick encounter into a fist fight. The game had to be stopped as the officials tried to regain control. This seemed to affect Calabar’s game a bit but with 2 minutes to go and the score 11-10 in STGC’s favor, Calabar looked like they were going to take the game.

However, two telling saves by the STGC goalie and the resulting counter attacks lead to the Knights scoring. The momentum had swung decisively and we would eventually score 5 goals in the last 90 seconds. It was a very dramatic win in the end.

Congrats to the STGC Lacrosse team, coach Damion McKenzie, his wife/ team manager Somi McKenzie and technical advisor/ assistant coach Chris Gilroy on the victory.
