J​oan Elaine (Cherry) Gruber Chaplin, late of Sherbourne Heights, Stony Hill, former Managing Director of Pyramid Training & Placement Institute, died on June 29, 2019 at the age of 81 after several years of illness.

Mrs. Gruber Chaplin served as Principal Lecturer of the College of Arts, Science and Technology (now the University of Technology) for several years where she ran the Secretarial Department.

In March of 2013, she was honored by the University of Technology for her “invaluable contribution to the development of the Administrative Management Programme.” She was also a lecturer and consultant in human resource development and conducted courses at the Alpha Commercial Institute, Police Academy and Staff College, Immigration Department and the Tax Administration, among other institutions.

Mrs. Gruber Chaplin was a leading member of the Jamaica Tourist Board’s “Meet the People Programme” for several years. Under the Programme, she opened her home to visitors from many countries to enable them to meet Jamaicans in informal settings and help them to imbibe aspects of Jamaican culture. One couple came from as far as Switzerland and they returned the compliment by having the Chaplins vacationing with them in the Swiss Alps.

She leaves her husband of 58 years, Hall of Fame journalist, Ken Chaplin; son, Christopher (Margaret); daughter, Angela and grandsons Jordan and and Brendan.

Funeral services for Mrs. Chaplin are scheduled for Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Church in Stony Hill, Jamaica starting at 11:00 am. Interment will take place at Tom’s River after service.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Immaculate Conception Church’s Education Fund.
