Obituary: Hubert George Curphey Duncker

On Tuesday, March 23, Hubert George Curphey Duncker, affectionately known by all as “Bert,” passed away peacefully at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Bert is fondly remembered by his sister Barbara Gibbs (Duncker); children Phillip, Desmond, Stephen, Debra, Leisa, Helene, Stasie, and Christina; grandchildren, Desi, Stephanie, David, Vashti, Goretti, Krysta, Warren, Sinclair, Gary Jr, Jaquelle, and Giana; great-grandchildren Desiree, Deshawn, Amasai, Ezeani, and Karie Lilou. Bert was predeceased by grandsons Jeremy and Dieterick.

Bert was born on March 16,1934 in Kingston, Jamaica, to Henry Karl Duncker and Ivy Louise Duncker (Brownie).

Bert attended Merl Grove High School in Jamaica. From 1955 to 1974, he was married to Laura Muir, with whom he had seven children. He emigrated to the United States in the early 1970s and settled in Brooklyn, where he worked for J&R Television in Park Slope for more than 54 years. He was married to Cynthia Edwards (deceased) from 1979 to 1994, with whom he had one child, Christina. He was married to Ethel Chin from 1994 until her death in 2018.

Bert was a member of the Shiloh Apostolic Church on Nostrand Ave in Brooklyn.

Bert petitioned for his seven eldest children to come to the United States from Jamaica, enabling all of them to lead independent lives here. He has also petitioned for others and helped many to come to the United States over the years. He is remembered as someone who was a friend to all and an expert on all things electronic.

A memorial service and interment in Jamaica is planned when the current Covid-19 pandemic restrictions are lifted.
